Understanding AS 4084 2023 Australian Standards for Pallet Racking

If you manage a warehouse or storage facility in Australia, complying with the latest standards is crucial for safety, efficiency, and legal compliance. One of the most important updates in recent years is the release of AS 4084 2023, the current Australian Standard for pallet racking. This standard replaces the previous 2012 version and introduces several significant changes that impact design, installation, inspection, and maintenance of steel storage racking systems.

Whether you are new to pallet racking or simply want to understand what has changed in AS4084 2023, this guide breaks it all down.

What Is AS 4084 2023?

AS 4084 2023, also referred to as AS4084 2023 or AS4084 racking, is the Australian Standard for steel storage racking, specifically selective pallet racking. It outlines the minimum safety requirements for:

  • Design
  • Fabrication
  • Erection tolerances
  • Test methods
  • Operation
  • Inspection and maintenance

This standard is enforced to ensure that racking systems across the country can handle expected loads safely and perform in different environments including those prone to seismic activity.

What Has Changed in AS4084 2023?

The 2023 revision includes updated engineering criteria to reflect modern design practices and improve safety across the board. Key changes include:

Design and Structural Updates

  • Tighter limits on deflection, ductility, and structural performance
  • Revised seismic mass coefficients affecting installations in earthquake-prone areas
  • Increased clarity on outdoor racking, including corrosion protection and suitable floor surfaces

Footplates and Anchoring

  • Selective pallet racking must have a minimum of two floor anchors per footplate
  • Footplates must be compliant with seismic and structural requirements depending on the installation site

Outdoor Racking Requirements

  • Racking must be installed on concrete floors. Surfaces like asphalt or bitumen are not acceptable
  • Components must be hot-dip galvanised or made from pre-galvanised coil
  • Powder-coated racking used outdoors must undergo more frequent inspections

Inspection Requirements Under AS 4084 2023

Under the latest standard, pallet racking inspections are mandatory and must be performed by a competent person—someone with experience in racking design, engineering, or installation.

Two Types of Inspections:

  • Informal Inspections:
    • Conducted daily or weekly by asset owners or staff.
    • Meant to catch obvious damage or safety hazards.
  • Formal Inspections
    • Required every 12 months at a minimum, though high-risk environments may require biannual checks.
    • Must include documentation, diagrams, and repair logs retained for the life of the system.

Key Safety and Compliance Requirements

Upright Protection

Install upright protectors minimum 400mm high at frame ends, gangways, and aisle crossings

Backing Mesh

Mandatory for single-sided racking adjacent to pedestrian walkways to prevent items falling off the back

Load Signage

Must be:

  • Permanent
  • Corrosion-resistant
  • At least A3 size
  • Font height minimum 20mm

Height Safety

End frames must extend at least 50 percent of pallet height above the top load beam when near a trafficable aisle

Why AS4084 2023 Compliance Matters

Adhering to the AS 4084 2023 standard is not just about ticking boxes. It is about:

  • Ensuring a safe workplace for your staff
  • Protecting your goods and equipment
  • Reducing liability and meeting insurance requirements
  • Avoiding fines and penalties from non-compliance

The Australian standards for pallet racking have evolved to reflect better practices and safer outcomes. Whether you are installing new racking, modifying your current system, or booking an audit, make sure everything aligns with AS 4084 2023.
